Celebrate ‘RAD Day’ with a Radical Remastering of the 80s BMX Film in Theaters on 3/21

It’s well-documented that I have a lot love for the 1980s-era movie Rad. While I may have worn the treads on the subject, I won’t let anything take the air out of my tires. So, I’m excited to share that the 1986 release is returning to theaters across the nation for a special one-night event on Thursday, Mar. 21 @ 7 p.m. local time. So, snag a ticket here today!

Fathom Events and Utopia Distribution have organized a remastered screening of the film in 4K, followed by a Q&A session with stars Bill Allen and Bart Conner, Utopia co-founder Robert Schwartzman, and moderated by superfan Ed Helms (known for his roles in The Office and The Hangover films).

Directed by Smokey and the Bandit‘s Hal Needham, Rad shares the adventure of one young man’s desire to win an infamous BMX race, fittingly called Helltrack. That young man is Cru Jones (Allen), a paperboy who passes his time going “ass-sliding” with fellow trick rider Christian Hollings (Lori Loughlin) and turning his small town into his playground.

One day, Cru faces the hard decision of either qualifying for Helltrack or taking the SATs to get into college. But what movie would this be if Cru let down the film’s title and gnarly ‘80s soundtrack by putting passion on the back burner in favor of education?

If you want to know more about Rad, check out our previous coverage, including interviews with Bill AllenBart ConnerTalia Shire, and Robert Schwartzman. We’ll see you Thursday!

I have been working as a film journalist since 2010, dividing the first four years between radio broadcasting and entertainment writing in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. In 2014, I entered Fresh Fiction (FreshFiction.tv) as the features editor. The following year, I stepped into the film critic position at the Denton Record-Chronicle, a daily North Texas print publication. My time is dedicated to writing theatrical film reviews, at-home entertainment columns, and conducting interviews with on-screen talent and filmmakers, as well as hosting a podcast devoted to genre filmmaking (called My Bloody Podcast). I've been married for ten happy years, and I have one son who is all about dinosaurs just like his dad.
