New ‘STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI’ trailer furthers characters’ search for identity

Preston Barta // Features Editor

Most of the time when it comes to trailers for big movies, especially for a film where there already are a few trailers and teasers out there to give one a good grasp on the tone and look of a story, I turn the other way. But with STAR WARS, it’s different. These movies are not movies, they’re events.

A new trailer for STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI has arrived. Disney aired the latest look at Rian Johnson’s upcoming film and the eighth installment in the franchise during ESPN’s Monday Night Football halftime show.

Check it out below!

My first reaction to the new trailer is that it’s everything I could hope for. There were a lot of issues people took with THE FORCE AWAKENS and how it recycled A NEW HOPE’s plot points and didn’t add enough imagination and wonder to the saga. While I personally loved THE FORCE AWAKENS quite a bit, it’s clear that a lot of those missing ingredients have been cooked up here in THE LAST JEDI. The creature design, the sets and the worlds all feel new and exciting. There is so much to digest here. I’m sure we will have much more to say about it come later, but for now. Let’s discuss it in the comment section!

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI opens in theaters on December 15.

I have been working as a film journalist since 2010, dividing the first four years between radio broadcasting and entertainment writing in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. In 2014, I entered Fresh Fiction (FreshFiction.tv) as the features editor. The following year, I stepped into the film critic position at the Denton Record-Chronicle, a daily North Texas print publication. My time is dedicated to writing theatrical film reviews, at-home entertainment columns, and conducting interviews with on-screen talent and filmmakers, as well as hosting a podcast devoted to genre filmmaking (called My Bloody Podcast). I've been married for ten happy years, and I have one son who is all about dinosaurs just like his dad.
