I wasn’t the prime market for MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS growing up. That was for the generation that came after me – and also the generation that came after that. It’s built up such a following that now this once cheesy kids show is now getting the big screen treatment. Judging by their teaser trailer, Director Dean Israelite (PROJECT ALMANAC) have spun this new iteration as THE BREAKFAST CLUB meets CHRONICLE.

Take a look:

Though this teaser does appear to lean a bit too much on the aforementioned obvious comparisons, I’d be willing to bet the film as whole will impress with a much more unique narrative given this is from the writer of REAL STEEL (John Gatins) and co-writer of X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (Ashley Miller).

I dig that it’s not playing heavy on the nostalgia of seeing the gang all suited up. Why spoil that poker hand early if you don’t have to? We also get a sneak peek at the crew’s nemesis, Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks), in action. I’m sure many of you will be eagerly awaiting Banks to deliver her “I’ve got such a headache” catchphrase during the course of this film’s run time.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.

POWER RANGERS will be in theaters on March 24, 2017.
