There’s something about the struggle to survive that makes for a particular cinematic experience. That specific pathos propel character-driven dramatics to a new heightened level. Already this Fall, we’ll have to white-knuckle it through EVEREST, ROOM, and THE MARTIAN. Now in the cold, crisp Winter, we’ve got co-writer/ director Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s THE REVENANT. And guys, by the looks of things, it would seem Iñárritu better have an awards speech or two ready – as he could stand to take home another Academy Award for this harrowing affair. Take a look below as Leonardo DiCaprio is ambushed by a bear.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption.

Based in part on Michael Punke‘s novel, the film also co-stars Domhnall Gleeson (who co-starred in last year’s gripping survivalist tale, UNBROKEN) and Will Poulter (THE MAZE RUNNER).

THE REVENANT opens on December 25, 2015 (limited); January 8, 2016 (wide).
