Could Common return for ‘JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3’?
Courtney Howard // Film Critic
JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 did exceptionally well over the weekend, raking in over $30 million. This is great news for the actioner as it seriously kicks tons of ass. With that kind of success, you can almost bet the titular character, his enemies and those responsible for creating him will return for more, right? Maybe.
In the second chapter of the series, the tables turn on our beloved Wick (Keanu Reeves), setting off an epic pursuit by multiple assassins through Rome and New York City. However, it’s one hitman in particular who’s his main foe – bodyguard Cassian (Common). While Wick always gets his man, there’s a rather ambiguous, slight open-endedness to Cassian’s arc.
At the film’s recent Los Angeles press conference, the Oscar winning performer joked about a potential return.
That might depend on how well I treat Chad and [producer] Basil [Iwanyk]. Honestly, it’s left up to the visionaries if Cassian will be back.
Director Chad Stahelski remained evasive as to the answer to the question of Cassian’s return.
We like being slightly ambiguous in the world. That’s a big part of the JOHN WICK world is to try to let the audience take a guess at. We kind of replicated that scene twice. John does the same type of move twice with two different characters. There’s a defining moment where he says to Common, ‘One character is left alive. One character is not.’ And that’s pretty much all we’ll say for now.
JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 is now playing. Read our review here.
