INDEPENDENCE DAY was a ginormous hit at the box office almost 20 years ago. It’s mind-boggling it took people this long to greenlight and make the sequel, INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE. But here we are. I guess director Roland Emmerich had to get a few other films like ANONYMOUS and STONEWALL out of his system first. Anywhoo, the first trailer for the highly anticipated Will Smith-less sequel has debuted and it teses lots of things: Jeff Goldblum, sweeping vistas of the alien attack and a handsomely bearded Bill Pullman. Take a look.

It appears Pullman’s President Whitmore sacrifices himself early on… and what mistake that will be if I’m right. That beard is cinematic gold. I mean, look at it!

Didn’t catch that? Look at it here:

Could Pullman’s beard be the missing link in his career? Me thinks yes.

Here’s the official synopsis:

We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
