Listen to cinematographer Greig Fraser on the maximalism of ‘DUNE: PART TWO’

Few films are as visually explosive as Denis Villenueve’s Dune films, which makes the people behind its images an immediate point of interest.

Greig Fraser, an Academy Award-winning cinematographer known for his work on The Batman and Rogue One, played a significant role in bringing these films’ imaginative and immersive looks to life. Whether it’s Timothée Chalamet riding a giant sandworm, foot soldiers taking out massive machinery, or gladiatorial fights devoid of color, Fraser’s work is something to be celebrated, especially in the next Dune chapter.

DUNE: PART TWO Q&A

If you’re curious about the craftsmanship that goes into creating a movie on the scale of Dune, listen to our interview with Fraser below. We discuss the selective focus of Fraser’s films, the black-and-white Giedi Prime sequences, and collaborating with editor Joe Walker to tell a story without dialogue.

Dune director Denis Villeneuve reteamed with cinematographer Greig Fraser to tell the next chapter.
Preston Barta

I have been working as a film journalist since 2010, dividing the first four years between radio broadcasting and entertainment writing in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. In 2014, I entered Fresh Fiction (FreshFiction.tv) as the features editor. The following year, I stepped into the film critic position at the Denton Record-Chronicle, a daily North Texas print publication. My time is dedicated to writing theatrical film reviews, at-home entertainment columns, and conducting interviews with on-screen talent and filmmakers, as well as hosting a podcast devoted to genre filmmaking (called My Bloody Podcast). I've been married for ten happy years, and I have one son who is all about dinosaurs just like his dad.
