Movie News: Filmmaker Danny Boyle Says His Next Project is the Sequel to 1996’s ‘TRAINSPOTTING’

There have been talks of a sequel to 1996’s cult film TRAINSPOTTING, starring Ewan McGregor (STAR WARS, Ep. I-III) and Kelly Macdonald (BOARDWALK EMPIRE), for some time now. In fact, two years ago filmmaker Danny Boyle brought it up to us when we asked him about it during an interview for TRANCE. However, Boyle revealed that it is official.

At his STEVE JOBS premiere at the Telluride Film Festival this past week, Boyle said if scheduling allows, he will make the sequel to TRAINSPOTTING— currently rolling with a title that American audiences will eat up (and soon voice their opinion on), PORNO.

“All the four main actors want to come back and do it. Now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together, which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series,” Boyle said at Telluride.

Those “two actors” are Jonny Lee Miller (Sick Boy in TRAINSPOTTING), who is riding the wave of success with CBS’ ELEMENTARY, and Robert Carlyle (Begbie in TRAINSPOTTING), who is a series regular on ABC’s ONCE UPON A TIME as Mr. Gold/ Rumplestiltskin. Both actors have expressed great interest in returning to Boyle’s world, along with McGregor, who seems keen on getting back on the heroin train by stepping into the shoes of his character Renton again.

Original screenwriter John Hodge, who also penned Boyle’s scripts for THE BEACH and TRANCE, is set to return. Hodge adapted the original film from the Irvine Welsh novel, and has supposedly already finished the script for PORNO.

While the sight of production may seem a little rocky at the moment, let’s hope the cast and crew can all return to continue this story 20 years later– because it seems the excitement by everyone who’s sure-to-be-attached is matched by the fans who want to see this happen.

I have been working as a film journalist since 2010, dividing the first four years between radio broadcasting and entertainment writing in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. In 2014, I entered Fresh Fiction (FreshFiction.tv) as the features editor. The following year, I stepped into the film critic position at the Denton Record-Chronicle, a daily North Texas print publication. My time is dedicated to writing theatrical film reviews, at-home entertainment columns, and conducting interviews with on-screen talent and filmmakers, as well as hosting a podcast devoted to genre filmmaking (called My Bloody Podcast). I've been married for ten happy years, and I have one son who is all about dinosaurs just like his dad.
