Movie Review/Interview: Mark Duplass & Director Charlie McDowell Talk About ‘The One I Love’

Preston Barta // Critic

THE ONE I LOVE | 91 min. | Rated R | Director: Charlie McDowell | Stars: Mark Duplass, Elisabeth Moss and Ted Danson

Rating: 3/4

There’s a twist near the start of THE ONE I LOVE that makes it damn near impossible not to spoil and talk about. However, what I can tell you is that it’s about a couple (Mark Duplass and Elizabeth Moss) who are facing some marital challenges and go to a weekend retreat to jump-start their relationship. From there, things get crazy, and it’s awesome (even with a head-scratching ending).

So you have been warned – this is not your typical romantic-comedy. This is not COUPLE’S RETREAT. There is more to it that you should witness.

Not convinced enough to buy a ticket? Watch our video interview with the star (Duplass, FXX’s THE LEAGUE) and director of the film (Charlie McDowell), where we talk about everything but the spoilers. We discuss movies that cause us to leave the theater feeling different about life, what makes love last, how the writer part of them is always on, and teaching college courses.

THE ONE I LOVE is playing in theaters now.

I have been working as a film journalist since 2010, dividing the first four years between radio broadcasting and entertainment writing in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. In 2014, I entered Fresh Fiction (FreshFiction.tv) as the features editor. The following year, I stepped into the film critic position at the Denton Record-Chronicle, a daily North Texas print publication. My time is dedicated to writing theatrical film reviews, at-home entertainment columns, and conducting interviews with on-screen talent and filmmakers, as well as hosting a podcast devoted to genre filmmaking (called My Bloody Podcast). I've been married for ten happy years, and I have one son who is all about dinosaurs just like his dad.
