Video Interview: Sharlto Copley and ‘HARDCORE HENRY’ filmmakers on the magic of their POV splatterfest

Preston Barta // Editor

Perhaps you’ve heard about this film or have seen its brutal and awesome trailer, but for the uninitiated, HARDCORE HENRY is a one-of-a-kind action flick filmed entirely from the protagonist’s first person perspective.

The trailer may highlight all the action and stunts – and boy, they feature some of the best movie death sequences (as weird as it is to say that) – but the film itself unleashes a lot of great comedy. One of the main sources of the jokes comes from Sharlto Copley (DISTRICT 9), who sat down with us, along with the film’s director (Ilya Naishuller) and producer (Timur Bekmambetov) after its regional premiere at South by Southwest last month.

We discussed how they want audiences to experience the film, if there’s a right or wrong way to tell a story and how they found the faith to pull this off.

HARDCORE HENRY opens on Friday, April 8.

I have been working as a film journalist since 2010, dividing the first four years between radio broadcasting and entertainment writing in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. In 2014, I entered Fresh Fiction (FreshFiction.tv) as the features editor. The following year, I stepped into the film critic position at the Denton Record-Chronicle, a daily North Texas print publication. My time is dedicated to writing theatrical film reviews, at-home entertainment columns, and conducting interviews with on-screen talent and filmmakers, as well as hosting a podcast devoted to genre filmmaking (called My Bloody Podcast). I've been married for ten happy years, and I have one son who is all about dinosaurs just like his dad.
