Courtney Howard // Film Critic
It may surprise you to learn that Melissa McCarthy doesn’t actually swear in real life. It’s called ACTING (said like Jon Lovitz’s “Master Thespian”), people. McCarthy has crested some indelible cinematic characters before (like in TAMMY, THE IDENTITY THIEF and BRIDESMAIDS) and now she returns with Michelle Darnell in THE BOSS.
In the film directed by McCarthy’s hubby Ben Falcone, Darnell is a titan of industry who experiences the proverbial fall from grace – only she didn’t have much grace prior to that fall. In order to pick herself back up again, she rebrands herself as “America’s Sweetheart,” uniting with her former hard-working employee Claire, played by Kristen Bell. Think of it as “A foul-mouthed Martha Stewart (who looks like SOUTH PARK‘s “Kyle’s mom”) meets TROOP BEVERLY HILLS.”
THE BOSS opens on April 8.
